Literary Terms

The tools and techniques which an author or writer uses to embellish his writing are known as Literary Terms or Literary Devices. Literary terms refers to the style and formatting through which a speaker or a writer emphasizes and improves his/ her speech or piece of writing masterfully. There are a lot of literary terms I would give the example of a few devices here like simile, metaphor, alliteration, allusion and more.

Simile

Simile is a type of comparison between two different words and we have to use word "like" or "as" in order to express the comparison.

Example:

  • Ali is like lion.
  • Amna is like a rose.
  • He is as brave as a soldier.

Metaphor

It is also a type of comparison in which one does not need to use any words.

Example:

  • Ali is a lion.
  • Amna is a rose.
  • He is a star.
Alliteration:

If the repetition of initial consonant sounds occur in a phrase or a sentence, it would become an example of alliteration.

  • Example:
  • She sells sea shells by seashore.
  • She saw seesaw somewhere else.
Allusion:

An indirect reference to some person, place or an event which could be found in the history. It is used to enhance the meaning of some text from the previous knowledge of the reader.

Example:

  • That is his Achilles' heel.
It is referring to the Greek hero Achilles. It is expressing the weaknesses of a person.
